Donna is part of a pretty impressive bloodline. Today we went to the Auto Show and got to meet a new arrival in the Mustang family.
In October of 1968, right about the time Donna was born, an iconic movie was released. Bullitt. A no glitter, all guts cop named Frank Bullitt – with two other cops – is assigned to what seems like a normal case: to watch a witness for 48 hours before he goes to trial on Monday. In the movie, Steve McQueen, who plays Frank Bullitt, drives a 1968 Ford Mustang 390 GT Fastback in an 11 minute long chase scene that set the bar for all car chase scenes since.
Today we saw the prototype of the 2019 Bullitt Special Edition Mustang.
The 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt edition builds on the content of the Mustang GT Premium with the Performance package and includes upgrades such as Brembo six-piston front brakes, a Torsen limited-slip differential, a larger rear anti-roll bar, and a bigger radiator to keep the Bullitt’s 5.0-liter V-8 engine cool during extended chases.
With 475 horsepower, or 15 more than the run-of-the-mill Mustang GT, the Bullitt achieves a top speed of 163 mph—8 mph more than the Mustang GT. Torque holds steady at 420 lb-ft, and a six-speed manual is the sole transmission offered.
The Bullitt has been stripped of almost all exterior badging. A single trunk-mounted badge marks the model’s connection to the film and mimics the design of a fuel-filler cap. Additionally, Ford sprinkles the Bullitt with chrome around its badgeless grille and around its window line. Red brake calipers and 19-inch wheels complete the car’s look. Two paint colors will be available: Highland Green, like the original movie car, and Shadow Black.
It does have a white cueball shifter.
It is cool that Donna was in the same generation as the original bullet. While she will most likely never be involved in a car chase or a jump, she is just as much a Mustang as the first Bullitt.
