At the most recent OKC Auto Show we were able to talk to some guys who were displaying year correct license plates on their vintage cars. We ask what the procedure for that was and they opened the secret door into the mystery of DMV in OK.
It seems you can apply to display a vintage plate on a vintage car but it has to be done in person and not all the people at the DMV know it, so you may have to ask multiple people.
We will cross that bridge when Donna is drivable, but we went ahead and got the plate so we would be ready.
